A Sheriff report, an E-911 communication record and a court filing can concern the same event but remain separate public-record sources. Route each request to the office that maintains that record family.
For Darlington County public records, identify whether the target is a Sheriff record, dispatch communication or court-related document. Use the Sheriff path for Sheriff-held material, E-911 for radio/call/CAD requests, and the appropriate legal office for its own filings. Keep those sources separate even when they concern the same incident.
| Record family | Likely starting point | Scope cue |
|---|---|---|
| Sheriff material | Sheriff section of the Courts & Legal directory | Bookings, releases and Sheriff FOIA resources belong to the law-enforcement lane |
| Dispatch communications | Darlington County E-911 | Radio traffic, telephone calls and computer-aided dispatch reports have a dedicated FOIA route |
| Court or legal record | The specific Clerk, Magistrate, Probate or other listed legal office | Choose the judicial or legal office tied to the proceeding instead of sending every legal question to the Sheriff |
Darlington County’s E-911 page specifically directs requests for radio traffic, telephone calls and computer-aided dispatch reports through its FOIA request form. That is a useful custody signal: a dispatch record can relate to a police or emergency event without being the same thing as an incident report maintained by a responding agency.
Keep dispatch material separate from later reports. A call or CAD entry can document what was communicated through the emergency system, while a Sheriff file may document the responding agency’s investigation or action. When both are needed, request them from their respective custodians and preserve each source label so the timeline is not collapsed into one record type.
Do not imply that a Sheriff response includes dispatch audio, court filings or probate records unless the source itself says so.
Note whether the returned material is radio traffic, a call record or a CAD report so it is not mistaken for an investigative report.
The legal office that supplied the document explains what system was actually searched.
